Dunkey's Music Video Green Eggs and Jam explained a dark and true story so HERE WE GO.
Explained Number One We are introduced to Sam as an insightful philosophical man, enlightened as he awakens to the world, stating the truth of "I am Sam, Sam I am." As the beat picks up we cut to an outsiders view who shows us the dancing, rambling fool that Sam really is.
Explained Number Two We are greeted by a man standing on a hill inside of a picture book. The shot zooms in on his face to show his introduction, stating that he is “Sam, Sam I Am.” Although this character is depicted initially as an epic person, the shot cuts to another man with a taller hat. For the purposes of this discussion, I will refer to this other man as “Joey”. Joey stands at the base of the hill, pointing behind his back with his thumb to Sam, telling the audience that he dislikes Sam, who is childishly bobbing up and down in place on the hill. Quickly, Sam jumps behind the hill from our perspective to somehow appear at the side of Joey. Sam inquires if Joey enjoys Green Eggs and Ham, even offering him a platter of this meal. Joey refuses, arms crossed, and affirms that he does not like Green Eggs and Ham. After this, Joey quickly calls “Sam” a bitch, a term that would anger many if they heard someone call them that. However, the subtle yet powerful statement that Sam is a bitch is seemingly ignored by Sam, who brushes it off with a smile. Sam continues to pester Joey, providing multiple locations including on a hot air balloon to eat the food, yet Joey again denies the plate. Joey reaffirms his distaste for Green Eggs and Ham as well as his hatred for Sam I Am. Sam offers a household and a partner in the form of a mouse to consume the plate, believing this will be the ultimate way to convince Joey. Joey yet again holds his ground and says that none of these options appeal to him. (This part of the video is convoluted. The animation depicts Joey about to punch Sam, asking Sam if he should punch him, yet I believe this should be the other way around. Sam has always been asking the questions in the same tone of voice, and for some reason this scene has the characters switch voice tone. This leads me to believe the songwriter, Jason Gastrow, had a different scene in mind than the animator, Drew Applegate). Joey, visibly triumphant, walks away from the hill from the beginning of this video. Sam now stands behind the hill again at the base, watching with a surprised and somewhat disgusted face. As Joey states his final dislike of the Green Eggs and Ham as well as Sam I Am, Sam snaps. Sam transforms into a much larger, green version of his original body, yet only his head is seen. He begins to forcefully try to feed Joey, even telling him to, “Suck on ham until you choke.”. But, as Sam shivers next to a pile of Green Eggs and Ham, Joey speaks from the bottom of the pile. He states, “Suck my dick you Sam I Am, suck my dick you fucking sham.” Joey then lists of many possible ways to eat the food, restating some that Sam already mentioned, but also bringing up some of his own such as eating the meal with a man, on the moon, or in a park. Finally, Joey ends the interaction with, “I will not eat them (the Green Eggs and Ham) with a mouse, now get the fuck out of my house!”. This concludes the video and cuts to the credits. I believe that this is the tale of a man named Joey defeating a demon. Sam, the demon, introduces himself in a very convoluted manner, stating who he is multiple times. He even seems to disappear behind the hill in the background, only to manifest from the side of the screen in the foreground. Joey never wavers, even managing to drop insults occasionally, calling Sam a “bitch” to end some of his statements. Joey manages to resist the temptation of the Green Eggs and Ham, justifying it in the simple idea that he does not like them, although it is likely our hero has never tried them. This is reminiscent of Jesus Christ resisting the temptations of Satan seen in the first four books of the New Testament. Eventually, Sam transforms into his true, demonic state, shifting between the Sam we have seen and a larger, more violent beast. However, Joey resists the temptations, listing off many reasons why he will not eat the Green Eggs and Ham, much like an exorcist removing a demonic presence, and the finishing statements are final and seem to defeat the evil demon that is Sam I Am.
